The occasional hesitations were as nothing compared to the wisdom of their playing, the sense that more than 60 years of music-making together were being encapsulated in that moment. Rather than using a conventional grand piano, they played on an upright which was permanently muted, and then amplified with great sensitivity by their son, also named Gy繹rgy. The result was a sound that seemed to owe nothing to human effort, floating upwards with supernatural gentleness and clarity.
