If you don't have to think about which child gets your last piece of bread until payday or how to get medicine, you do have more room to think of how to make more money or get more education. Since some seem to think all poor people are just lazy slobs who want handouts, I think this is important. Perhaps they are too worried about survival to think about how to best evade taxes or how to get that college degree. Perhaps bad things happened to them and they lost what they did have...it does explain a lot, whether people want to face it or not.
