For that matter, social and fiscal conservatism aren't entirely unrelated. Familial breakdown increases the strain on the safety net. Rightly or wrongly, social conservative issues are framed as being related to keeping the institution of the family strong (I'm personally skeptical of that argument as it applies to gay marriage, but it's difficult to pretend that there's no connection).
